Whenever I’m working on a new cookie design the first place I always start is the inspiration. In this case the inspiration came in the form of a comic book style graphic word. It’s important to really study your inspiration so you can pull just the right style elements that will make your final product related but not just a direct copy of the inspiration. When designing you also need to think about the medium you are working in and edit down the design to something that is achievable in an edible form. Once your cookie is baked it’s time for the outlining of the design which will serve as the boundaries that will be flooded with the colors. A steady hand is patience is needed in this stage, as well as some extra cookies to test out which tip will work the best for your application. After your outline is set and dry all you need to do is flood the cookie with all the final colors to bring it to life.

For Courtney’s Baby Shower there were only a couple things that she wanted, and the main request was the colors of pink and purple. With that knows we passed some ideas back and forth to come up with the concept of using those colors to make a polka dot cake with a large bow on top. The drastically different shades of pink helped highlight the different polka dots and the bow was just the perfect way to top off this whimsical cake.

These cuties were made for a Country Western themed fundraiser held in the Pacific Palisades. All the tables at the party had gingham print tablecloths with denim runners which the cookies felt right at home on. A really nice touch to the party was the use of hail bails to create all the needed structural elements such as a backdrop for the band and a place to setup all the carnival games. The party and the cookies were a huge hit!

For Fri’s Baby Shower she wanted something inspired by Marie Antoinette. Fri is one of those people who just brings a smile to your face anytime you see her and has a wonderful personality so she needed a cake to match. I carved the tiers of red velvet cake and then began to layer the fondant to achieve all the ruffles and drapes of fabric. One of my favorite details is how the hair whimsically twirls around on the back of the head. The entire cake is edible, face and all!

Design inspiration can come from anywhere. A piece of wallpaper, favorite childhood board game, or an original painting are all great places to start. In the case of Emilie’s Baby Shower cake it came from the cute yet modern invitation. Emilie’s Mom send over the invitation and couple reference images of different types of cakes she liked. I used these as a jumping off point to eventually come up with the final design for the cake shaped like a “present”. The cake not only reflected the overall color scheme of the event but also brought in some of the specific design elements from the invite such as the umbrella and stripes.
